Aurie L

For as long as she can remember, Aurie L. has found an outlet for her artistic and creative pursuits, but oddly enough she never really considered herself to be an “artist”. “I didn’t really think of myself as an artist because it was just what I did, not necessarily how I saw myself.”

She is not sure if she chose art or if art chose her. Art has always been in her DNA, she was excited by the color, design, and texture of fabric. She traces her love for fabric, her current medium of choice, back to watching her mother sew. “Seeing my mother create such beautiful clothes inspired me to envision how I could use fabric in my own creations. This was the beginning of my fabric journey!”

As a self-taught artist, she started by creating doll clothes, her own clothes, costumes, and fabric dolls. Aurie L. finds inspiration everywhere. She has traveled and lived all over the world as an army wife with Vernon, her husband of 35 years. After the birth of their two sons, she found joy in using her love for fabric to begin experimenting with collages to capture some of the stories from her family and their travels.

Now as a full-fledged fabric artist she loves creating art that tells the stories that are meaningful to her as a Black woman, wife, mother, daughter, sister, and aunt as well as the stories of others. Whereas she was reluctant to call herself an artist in the past, she now fully embraces the moniker. “I Am An Artist, and I am proud to share my art and my storytelling with others.”
