People in the Field Series– Remembering the journey along the Underground Railroad, and those who
utilized it to escape to freedom is necessary to honor the lives of enslaved ancestors and it is the
essence of People in the Field. This series features quilts with the codes believed to have been used to
guide the enslaved to freedom, while focusing on those who utilized the post-slavery system of
sharecropping to survive and build a life for their families. People in the Field speaks to the importance
of not forgetting those who made that journey and those who continued to work hard to support their
families and their communities.
